Question for you all

So when you first get your puppies, how active are you in their socialization? I know some raisers get started right away (on non-dog areas since they haven’t had their shots yet) and other raisers go no-trips until after a few months.

Also, what do you do if you have to go somewhere, have a baby puppy, and it’ll be a somewhat long/busy situation so the puppy might get overwhelmed. Do you bring a crate? Do you chance it and leave the puppy at home? Just curious.

Edit: Just so you all know, I’m not looking for advice in a particular situation. I’ll be much more chill with this new puppy, since I’ve done starter pups before. I just asked because it’s something I ran into with Lawrence and P-mo.

Puppy sightings

In the last 24 hours I have seen 2 service dogs. One was a very cute yellow lab working CCI dog named Beth. She is working for a young boy who goes to my church. I thought of Madison when I saw her πŸ™‚

And then today I look out the window as I’m opening at work, and I see a black puppy in a green vest walk by! So I ran outside and met FBL “Finola”. She’s very very sweet and very laid-back. I love how all you need to say is “I raise guide dogs, too” and you immediatly have a good 15-minute conversation with any other raiser. We are unique people. EDIT: After searching for her on the littermate list, I realized she’s Festival’s sister!! Reminded me A LOT of him, too.

Oh and there’s also a golden retriever CCI dog being raised around here. I see it with its raisers on walks occasionally, but don’t know its name or anything..I’ve always been in my car.

Seeing all the dogs makes me just so much more excited for the puppy that’s coming in June!!!! Actually it’s exactly 3 weeks from today. πŸ˜€

They’re out of May puppies.

You have no idea how sad I am. I will not be raising any puppies for the next 3 (at least) years due to college.

EDIT: I did tell my leader that if a May puppy becomes available, I’m still all for it. So there’s always that slight possibility. And also, if Vortex does not go back on the June truck, maybe I can work with their June puppy for the month, unofficially (since once it becomes official, it seems to get more complicated :D)

For those of you who are curious about my last post and the cryptic comment about decisions and dogs I thought I’d give you a little update:

I have no news. lol.

HOWEVER, Vortex’ raisers and our family have figured out an arrangement that would make it possible for me to starter raise their next puppy. This would be a puppy off the May 14th puppy truck and would either be transferred to their family at the June truck (if Vortex makes it back on the June truck) or by July 5th (since I go to all-day work on July 6th). That’s my not news. I’ll definitely post the final decision.

I love shopping. Especially when you get almost the whole day off from school and then go shopping. And ESPECIALLY when you get to take certian little four-legged, green-vested, black-furred creatures with you. (i.e. Vortex)

Tex was SO excited to see me! It’s been a couple of months since I’ve gotten to take him somewhere (I’m going to work on being allowed to take him back to school…) and it was all I could do to keep him from jumping into the front seat with me πŸ™‚ First we headed to Panera for lunch…

I love Panera but Tex was, let’s just say, not too thrilled. So much food. So hard being a guide dog πŸ˜‰ After that was just ran several errands. He’s about 13 months old, but a fantastic dog. He’s improved SO much since last time I worked with him. We just had a good ‘ol time. Headed into a few pet stores to find a great birthday present for the little man and also did a little bit of training with other animals, and dog food, and kitty litter πŸ™‚

I really do love this dog. I mean, I’ve loved a lot of other puppies, but I love this one as much as any of my own dogs. He’s just so sweet, has the best personality, and will be a great dog for whoever he ends up with–whether as a guide or pet.

Apparently we’re hoping for a June recall. His raiser has to get her next puppy in June so that it can be ok to leave home during the work day, in September. However, it’s a possibility that Tex won’t be ready in June, but they’d still need that age of a dog in order for it to work out. That led us to an interesting discussion about puppies which, if you think hard enough, you might figure out what was thought up, but it’s still in the thinking phases so I’m not going to say anything. πŸ˜€

I love Vortex.

A lot.

That’s my girl.

He’s a jolly good Fellow

Today I stole Mr. Fellow from his raisers. It’s such a great name! The entire time we’d say “let’s go little Fellow”. I love it. πŸ˜€ He’s such a doll.

Of course, being a black, it made it three times harder to get decent pictures of him…

We went to our outdoor mall while school was still in session and he was a pro! This little guy is only 3 months old, but he was so fantastic! Most of the time he’d just sit. Sometimes it was hard to get him going after he’d sit or lay down, but he was the PERFECT dog to take shopping! Just lays in one spot, put him on the long leash, and you can walk around all you want–he’s not budging.

As I was leaving See’s Candies, I spotted a little black ball of fur in a green jacket that I didn’t know, so of course I had to go say hi. Fellow and I met baby Marlissa (not sure how you spell it) who is just brand new. I believe 11 weeks. Her raiser was meeting with some other people so I couldn’t talk very long, but she did wink at me for her picture.

Then we just kept shopping and Fellow just kept sleeping. He was so great, probably the best puppy I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a lot of puppies. Well, not raised them, but had them at my house. I’m like the baby puppy sitter and starter raiser both in one. πŸ˜€

Then we went over to my church while my shopping buddy (and partner in crime) had a meeting with my youth pastor. So Fellow and I took pictures. Well, I took the pictures, and Fellow just looked cute.

And lest you think I don’t like taking pictures……here’s some more:

Oh before I forget, funny story. Not sure if this is “guide dog approved” or not, but it’s just one of those things. πŸ˜€ After we finished shopping at the town center (the outdoor mall) we decided we needed to go to just one more place–the thrift store, to find a belt. The little Fellow had such a busy day so far that I really didn’t want to take him in, but I knew I couldn’t leave him in the car ’cause ya get two teenage girls into a thrift store, and it’ll be a while. So I brought him in with a brilliant idea–he could ride in the cart! It worked really well, and he slept the entire time. Once he fell asleep we put some clothes over top of the cart to make it darker, quieter, and so people wouldn’t freak out seeing a black lab in a shopping cart. But it was soooo cute!! He slept for an hour andΒ a half straight, we checked in on him every once in a while, and he never woke up. Silly sleepy boy. πŸ˜€

Then we came back to my house for his raiser to pick him up and he and Mary (my partner in crime) and I hung out on the lawn in the gorgeous sun and…..guess what??? Took pictures…

We had a great time, and I’d be happy to have my little Fellow back any time. In the meantime…anyone got a puppy out there who wants to go shopping tomorrow??? πŸ˜€
